Richard Dunster-Sigtermans
Richard Dunster-Sigtermans valiantly attempts to be an engineer, building large and complex models out of Meccano – these models, in fact, rarely work, suggesting that the decision many years ago to pursue music as a career rather than engineering has made the world a far safer place.
Richard studied at the Royal College of Music, London, and the universities of London and Birmingham; he holds a PhD in the performance practice of British organ music of the 20th century, and enjoys a catholic taste in music, ranging from plainsong to prog rock (but excluding Wagner). As a player and conductor he has performed throughout the British Isles, Europe and North America. Church appointments have included positions at St James’s Piccadilly, The King’s Chapel of the Savoy, Bath Abbey and Rugby Parish Church; commercial recordings have ranged from solo performances to directing choirs for classical and pop CDs and film soundtracks, along with broadcasts on BBC TV and radio. His conducting experience encompasses instrumental ensembles (orchestras, wind groups, jazz bands), choirs (professional chamber choirs, church choirs, choral societies) and the stage (musical s and operas).
For 33 years Richard taught in independent schools, including Rugby School as Director of Music from 2003 to 2012, and additionally was an examiner for 30 years on ABRSM’s practical, diploma, jazz and theory panels. He continues to work as a freelance musician and as ABRSM’s Chief Theory Moderator.
